Diabetes is the condition in which the body does not properly process food for use as energy. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies.<\/span><\/p>

It develops when your pancreas doesn\u2019t make enough insulin or any at all, or when your body isn\u2019t responding to the effects of insulin properly. Diabetes affects people of all ages.<\/span><\/p>

Over time, having consistently high blood glucose can cause health problems, such as heart disease, nerve damage and eye issues.<\/span><\/p>

Glucose comes from two major sources: food and the liver.<\/span><\/p>

Sugar is absorbed into the bloodstream, where it enters cells with the help of insulin.<\/span><\/p>

The liver stores and makes glucose.<\/span><\/p>

When glucose levels are low, such as when you haven’t eaten in a while, the liver breaks down stored glycogen into glucose. This keeps your glucose level within a typical range.<\/span><\/p>

Types of diabetes<\/b><\/h2>

Type 1 diabetes:<\/b> results from failure of the pancreas to produce enough insulin due to loss of beta cells. This form was previously referred to as “insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus” (IDDM) or “juvenile diabetes”. The loss of beta cells is caused by an autoimmune response. The cause of this autoimmune response is unknown.<\/span><\/p>

Prediabetes<\/b>: This type is the stage before Type 2 diabetes. Your blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be officially diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/p>

Gestational diabetes<\/b>:\u00a0 occurs when pregnant women without a previous history of diabetes develop high blood sugar levels. It usually goes away after pregnancy. However, if you have gestational diabetes, you\u2019re at a higher risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.<\/span><\/p>

Neonatal diabetes:<\/b> This is a rare form of diabetes that occurs within the first six months of life. It\u2019s also a form of monogenic diabetes. About 50% of babies with neonatal diabetes have the lifelong form called permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus. For the other half, the condition disappears within a few months from onset, but it can come back later in life. This is called transient neonatal diabetes mellitus.<\/span><\/p>

Causes of diabetes<\/b><\/h2>
